Looking for French bands to discover? Meet Selenic!

It's always nice to discover local bands and I'm really happy to introduce you guys to the french rock / metallers Selenic, hailing from Mulhouse, France. The guys just released their debut album on major streaming platforms and were kind enough to answer a few questions for us. Check out the full interview below!

Hey Selenic! For those who might discover your band via this interview, would you mind introducing yourselves and your sound?

We are a 4-piece band from Mulhouse/France playing with the nuances and freedom of rock music, switching between stellar and sharp atmospheres, drawing our inspiration mainly from progressive music and metal we heard during our teenage years. We love to place emotions in the center of our songs.

How would you describe your local rock / metal scene?

Luckily, our region always had a large audience for these genres and we see new bands emerging every year. The proximity with Germany and Switzerland also helps to attract a bigger audience and it’s quite frequent to see local bands trading concerts between all 3 countries.

You've just released your debut album “Resilience”. How long have you worked on this release and how would you describe your writing process for this record?

The band was born mid-2018 and we finished writing the whole album at the end of 2021. The first months were dedicated to getting used to playing with each other even though we were already friends years before we started as a band. We agreed quickly on what kind of music we wanted to head to since we’re all fond of progressive music. The writing was limpid because we all needed something more in our lives. It was about getting rid of frustrations, anger, doubt, regrets and finding a path toward greener horizons. We worked with all our heart.

Any funny stories to share from your recording sessions?

Our sound engineer was working with a trainee during the week when the vocals were recorded. She was observing and learning studio work. Since she had a lovely voice, we asked her for fun to perform some backing vocals on one song in particular where it made complete sense to have a female voice, adding such a nice touch of elegance and smoothness to this part of the song that we decided to keep it on the album.

Which song, according to you, best reflects the overall spirit of the album?

Closure is maybe the one song that reflects this duality we always try to tame. Mixing metallic fury with more ethereal sounds and having a hopeful and lyrical finale.

Please describe the artwork of your album. What’s the idea behind the visual?

The word “resilience” implies that a fracture is inevitable at some point between the part where you fight with yourself and the part when things are improving. Since we often find ourselves dreaming about space and given our band name, the moon imagery quickly became obvious and we came up with this fragmented moon to illustrate the concept.
