Metallers Dépérir talk about their upcoming album, “Black Beast”

Hello Dépérir, thanks for your time. Would it be please possible to introduce your band to our readers? Hi! Dépérir is a Canadian metal band born in France in 2011 called The Unholy Project. Nico (Guitar) and Sorthei (Drum) have lived in Québec City since 2014. In 2015, we recruited WT (Vocal) and Arawn (Bass) and we changed the name to DÉPÉRIR. In 2017, the first album came out and since then, we have played with many bands like: NARGAROTH, TAAKE, HELHEIM, BLACKLODGE, CRYPTOPSY, NEIGE ETERNELLE, APES, OUTRE TOMBE, SACCAGE. What's the story behind your band's name? When we re-created the band in 2015, we wanted to change the name. A new start in a new country but with guys who speak the same language! WT wanted to sing in French, and we naturally looked for a French name! DÉPÉRIR is what we all do, wasting away, slowly we rot. After a change in your lineup, you're back with a new single, titled “Black Beast”. What's the story behind this song? Indeed! I am the original member left in the band! Sorthei is now captain in an airline company, he did not have time for DÉPÉRIR anymore. I decided to change the singer and the bass player to explore new sounds and push Dépérir’s music further. “Black Beast” is the expression of our defeat in front of life, in front of the dark side of humans! Our submission to all these things we love and sadly destroy our world: Avidity, sex, money, power etc. The song is taken from your upcoming second album, “Black Beast”. How long have you worked on it and what kind of songs can we expect? The pandemic prevented us from moving forward with the composition of the album! I have been working on this album since 2018 and we started to record the post-prod in 2019. All songs were ready to record at the end of 2019, but you know the rest… I decided to record guitars, bass, and create the drum all by myself. When it was done, my friend Kevin Foley (Benighted/Abbath) recorded the drum in France and I recorded the vocals at home with my new singer Bob Girard. You can expect brutal songs on this album, mid-tempo songs, thrash, death, black, and all kinds of metal which reflects my musical background. No song sounds like the others on this album and I think this is its strength! Can we talk about the process of creating the artwork of the album and the overall idea behind this visual? Alexandre Goulet made the artwork before we created the album! He proposed it to us and it was a great match! Go check his amazing work!

I’m sure you are, like a lot of people, missing live shows. Do you have some dates planned for the rest of the year or 2022? 2021 is dead! Unless you play in front of a cut in half crowd with a fucking mask on his face, hands full of Purell smelling old disgusting cheap vodka, or do virtual concert... FUCK THAT… I don’t blame bands for doing that, but I think that a show must be shared with the public. How sad it is when a band finishes a song and… nothing. 2022, we’ll see. For sure we will be ready when the time comes! The last words are for you. If you have a message to convey, here’s your chance! If you don’t like Dépérir, that’s ok, just go fuck yourself! :-)
