Earthstate talk about their recently-released debut album!

Earthstate is a pop punk / hardcore band from Lyon, France. The band consists of Stane Jackson (vocals) Maxime Divetain (guitar), Dewi Morel (bass) and Thibs Gillie (drums). On March 22nd, the band revealed its debut self-titled album, and is now here to talk about it in the following interview! Earthstate



Hello, Earthstate! Thanks for your time! For those who don’t know you yet, would you mind introducing your band to our readers? Hi, thank you for having us! We are a 4-piece alternative rock band from Lyon, France. Our first self-titled album dropped out a few weeks ago, and is available on all your favorite streaming and downloading platforms. If you like catchy choruses and both aggressive and melodic parts you may like us! How would you describe the music scene in France in general? There is a lot of classic rock and metal bands in France like everywhere else, but a very few in more alternative styles. It’s like a microcosm, a small village where everybody knows each other! I think it’s because it’s very difficult to grow a music project in France. These music styles are not as popular as they are in other countries and the public is very passionate but demanding too. But the good point is quality is over quantity: we are proud to see that some French bands are really killing it right now, and some of them will play this year’s big European summer festivals… We hope it will encourage upcoming French bands like us to follow the same path! It’s quite funny to see that you guys describe your music as “alternative rock”, but many of your fans and followers describe it as a mix between pop-punk and melodic hardcore. What do you personally think? Fans and medias that describe us as a mix between pop-punk and melodic hardcore are absolutely right! Our main influences are some references of these subgenres. Our music is mixing pop-punk, melodic hardcore, but also a lot of ambient parts, a few hip-hop verses…We chose a more generic term to summarize this, but call us as you want: you will be right! :) How do you manage your time between your personal life and the band? Isn’t it hard? It’s difficult for sure, managing a band is like running a small company. The musical aspect (creating music and contents, rehearsals, working for shows…) is huge. But the other side of the iceberg (communication, finances, dealing with external providers…) is as important as the first one and all these aspects are taking a lot of time. It’s not easy because we all have full-time jobs, and the band is like a second full time job on evenings and week-end! Fortunately, we are working like a real team, and we are dividing all the tasks between us to be as efficient as possible. We are glad that our families are very supportive, and we can count on friends to help us sometimes. You recently unveiled your debut self-titled album. How was the recording experience? The recording experience was great, some of us had already recorded some albums with previous bands so we knew how we wanted to work on this first Earthsate’s record. We chose to work with our friend Romain Maillot from Acrom Records, so we recorded in a very relaxed atmosphere and took the time to improve or demos until we were 100% satisfied of the result.
Tell us one thing no one else knows about this record. Before recording, our demos were much more heavier because our guitars where tuned very low, like 3 tons and a half lower than a standard guitar tuning. We finally chose a softer tuning that was more coherent with our style, and that fitted better with our singer’s vocal range. If you had to pick one song on this record that best reflects its overall spirit, which one would you pick and why? “No Turning Back”, because it’s a good mix between all our influences. That’s why we chose this one as a first single and our first music video to introduce the band (available on YouTube if you haven’t seen it yet!)
Are you happy with the feedback you received so far, from both your fans and the media? We are so happy that we received a lot of positive and encouraging feedback! People seem to be receptive of our mix different styles like we talked before. The best thing is that we received feedback of people that are not usually listening to this kind of music, and still enjoyed it because of catchy choruses, ambient parts etc… Even if it’s too soft or too heavy for them!
